The Roof

Before we closed on the house, we knew that the main roof of the house would have to be replaced within a year or so. As we have learned with being home owners, things either creep up on you over time or happen much quicker than expected. In this case, a portion of the roof needed to be addressed sooner than expected. Luckily we were able to pull in a few favors with family member and were able to get the portion done fairly quickly.

As I usually take the majority of the progress photos and the fact that I was on the roof, I do not have many to show. The first weekend we had a few friends over to help with stripping of the old shingles. With harnesses on and the fear of heights sidelined, we began shoveling shingles. Once complete, we could see the condition of existing roof deck. Luckily I had planned for laying new osb down over the existing boards to create a nice, even roofing surface.

That's not a sky light dear
As expected, there was a bit of rot in the lower foot and a half of the roof where the shingles were at their worst. We used flooring boards from the attic that were dimensionally equivalent to the existing roof decking to patch in that section. As the weekend drew to a close, we tarped the roof and waited for the following weekend to finish.

Once we finished with the osb, we installed drip edging, ice/water barrier around the perimeter of the roof, and tar paper (we left extra ice/water barrier extended over the ridge to the other side so we can tie the two sides together when we address the rest of the roof in the spring).

All that was left was to lay shingles and address some of the flashing around the chimney to which we completed the following morning

As a bonus:

When we replaced the rotted lower section of the roof, we found the original scrolled rafter tails hidden behind the vinyl soffit. Hopefully they will be unveiled in the future.
