The Roof - Part 2 of 3 (I hope)

Over the last 2 weekends I have been working on getting another portion of the roof ready to be shingled. The rain did not hold off as it seems to happen on any to be roof day last Saturday, instead I split two full cords of firewood.

As a sidetrack from roofing, we are very fortunate that my brother in law works for a tree service and his boss passed along the perk that his employees have access to free firewood to us.  With help from the 'new' family, we were able to buck up around 4 full face cords of wood, enough for the winter ahead.

Sunday proved to be a much nicer day and I was able to get the entire roof stripped of shingles and ready for osb the following day.

I am still not a fan of heights or roofs

However, some of the nicest views around are at the top

No matter how many projects or deadlines I make for myself, I always judge how long they will take too optimistically. That was the case for laying new osb on the roof, I had hoped to do it in a day, but ended up taking nearly two. With rain on the way later in the week, I spend a few late evenings, one of which pushed that needed a flood light and a full moons help until 8:30pm (it is pretty dark around here this time of year by then) while installing drip edge, ice water membrane, and some tar paper. The rest of the roof was able to be tarp'ed over for the rain.

We were very fortunate to have the help of two amazing friends when it came to finishing the tar paper and shingling this past weekend. They showed up bright and early (a little too early for this fair weather, sleep in roofer) and stayed until dark to ensure that it was done.

We were able to get a nice rhythm going once the shingling started with each person handling a task, cutting starters, carrying bundles, rolling tar paper and ice/water membrane, nailing shingles, and installing flashing.

And there she is.

As was the case last fall, I decided to hold off on doing the last portion of the roof until the coming spring/summer. This time of year, we are running out of time and daylight for the number of projects that await us when we get home, and to try and complete it would be too difficult. We need to take out first year of marriage a little easy, even though we have survived this renovation quite well so far.
