Early Yields

The wet weather and chill in the air lifted early this week. The temperatures have rose quickly and today it is in or near the 90's. The first bounty of our little garden has emerged, a delicious, juicy, and slightly spicy radish.
Early in the week we received our order from the Arbor Day Foundation. A few baby trees (twigs) and some larger ones ready to find their place on the homestead. We planted a willow tree near the pond (above), a red maple in the front yard, and located a few forsythia to a temporary home until we can clear where they are going. The trees are all nicely protected and watered, hopefully they will remain that way without help from the rabbits and deer. The week prior we received our 10 free trees, they are currently in 1 gallon pots to see how well they fair this year before finding them a new home.
With the warm weather comes the visions of grandeur in the garden. The first place to start was to clean back the overgrowth from the end of last year and this spring. We are finally going to get mulch down on all the areas around the raised beds this year!
After a couple hours of shoveling, raking, and pulling I made a dent in the overgrowth. I weeded and cleaned the beds, planted some radishes, a few squash, an abundance of beans, a barrel or cukes, and a scattering of onions. With the coming weather in the forecast, the gardens should be at their prime.

Until next time...
