Unknowns

     Today on "What is behind that wall" we explore the living room. We knew we had paneling and thought there was drywall behind that, but was it salvageable? Only one way to find out. Behind our first layer of paneling is a second layer, painted white to boot! Before we can see what is behind the second layer we have to pry it off the wall as it was glued to the drywall. Well, it looks as though the drywall is not worth saving it. Fortunately behind that drywall is a 2"x4" wall over the existing lath and plaster, with the original trim work in tact. 

  

  

     The drywall is not worth saving especially since there is a  2"x4" wall over the existing lath and plaster, with the original trim work in tact. With removing the existing, we will gain some space back in the living room and can possibly reuse the trim work. We will have to see what can be done with the electrical without furring out a wall.  

     From the beginning, I have been very careful with what power I leave on in the house in regards to what is unknown to me. In nearly all the rooms that we use, I have ran a new power lead to a junction box, eliminating any cloth wire junctions, and establishing a safe connection. A perfect example of this trust was found when I peeled back some of the paneling in the living room. A wire that was not properly routed in the wall, pinched between a stud and paneling had a nail through the center. It looks as though the nail missed a direct hit with cutting a wire, but if may have nicked it, and that's enough proof for me that my caution is valid.
