Heating Up
The next task I am tackling finishing is to get the wall oven wired up and walls finished. It started after I had walked past the oven area a few times and realized it was time to do something about it. The area was originally covered in wood, but I wasn't a fan of the look and quality of the finish so I decided to rip it off and dry wall. As I was removing the paneling, a few other projects adjacent to it spoke up saying I should kill two or three birds with one stone.
The door to our basement, most likely original to the house, opened into the basement in a way that it was notched to clear the stairs, it leaked a lot of air, and simply put, I did not like it. We had a couple of spare doors from the upstairs remodel, I decided to use one of them to replace the existing. The "new" one would be wider and taller door and would open into the kitchen, making the basement more accessible.
A bit of demo, a couple of 2x4's, some shims, screws, nails, and drywall, we had a new doorway. In keeping with reusing what we have, I took an existing door frame from another door, cut it down, and shimmed and leveled it in place. As is with the rest of the house, the floor is not level under the door, it was about 3/4" out from one side to the other. I made a new door threshold from a piece of of wood in the attic, notched it out, chamfered the edge, and leveled it.
Another eye sore that would be addressed was the hole in the ceiling that was created when I framed the wall oven closet. Once hanging drywall was done, it was onto the mudding. For the most part, well 60% of the time, I seem to have gained patience and the slightest enjoyment for mudding. After it was all sanded, the wife took over painting, it's her specialty. All that is left is to fill a crack in the ceiling left from the previous owners and we can finish painting. We are dreaming big here, but we might, almost, and soon, have a presentable and put together kitchen. Heck, we might even get the backslash put up soon!
Dreaming big part time and on a budget.
